BECTU Vision’s Freelance Foundations at BAFTA Guru Live

We had great fun joining BAFTA Scotland at Glasgow School of Art in April for this year’s BAFTA Guru Live Scotland. The event is a festival for new entrants in Film & TV and the day had a programme of sessions for emerging talent designed to build networks and hear from the best in the business.

Along side BAFTA’s masterclasses, we assembled a top team of experts to share their practical advice on giving yourself the best start and building strong freelance foundationsin film and television. Our free-to-attend programme consisted of 6 sessions:

We kicked off with a presentation by BECTU Vision’s Jena Hunter on Freelance Working in Film & TV, talking about the range of roles exist within a film crew, what it’s like to work on a production and we’ll share practical signposts for support available to help with your next steps.

Next up was a panel session on Building Strong Freelance Foundations chaired by BECTU Vision Co-Manager, Linda Fraser and a panel of experts discussing the challenges of working as a freelancer and sharing their advice for giving yourself the best start. The panel consisted of our Freelance Foundation courses tutors: Osteopath – Andrew Patterson, Health & Safety Consultant – Mairi Ritchie, Positive Psychologist – Michelle White and we were joined onscreen by Finance and Networking Guru – David Thomas.

After lunch we had three micro-learning sessions from the tutors: Physical Wellbeing Workshop with Osteopath, Andrew Patterson, Build Sustainable Resilience into your Life and Career with Psychologist & Coach, Michelle White and Safety on Sets with Health & Safety Consultant, Mairi Ritchie

We wrapped up the day with BECTU Vision Co-Manager, Amy Shaw who chaired a panel of former BECTU Vision Trainees Career Pathways: Exploring Film & TV Traineeships with Script Supervisor Tayler Norris, Electrician David Hart, Script Editor Amber Saunders who shared their insight on how their training prepared them for freelancing and what they have learned in their first few years in the industry.

A big thanks to our tutors, panellists, former Sarah Mindel our former Learning Co-ordinator who came to help us on the day and to the BAFTA Scotland team for a fantastic day!

Look out for the Freelance Foundation sessions that we run with the Tutors throughout the year to further develop your skills in: Sustainable Resilience, Practical Strategies for Tackling Bullying and Harassment, Physical Resilience, Health & Safety, Networking & Social Media Skills and Finance for Freelancers.
