Freelance Foundations: Finance for Freelancers

Our Freelance Foundations courses are designed to equip you with the essential skills to help you thrive as a freelancer.
Over three hours the participants will gain tips and insights into how money flows in and out of a freelancer’s life. We will look at how HMRC treats freelancers, whether PAYE or sole trader, and how to use various tools (provided) to save time on paperwork while covering all the bases.
By the end of the workshop participants should be able to:
> Separate and quantify personal and business finances
> Understand the difference between PAYE freelancing and self-employed status
> Understand how tax and NI work for freelancers of all types
> Meet current tax deadlines and be prepared for HMRC’s Making Tax Digital project
> How to agree work, invoice correctly and get paid on time
> Draw up effective cash flow plans (spreadsheets provided)
> Know where to find more help
Participants will receive access to downloadable templates and practical tips.
Who is this course for?
This course is aimed at early stage freelancers but suitable for all freelance film & TV practitioners in all departments.
Tutor:
This course is delivered by David Thomas, a highly experienced broadcaster, trainer and manager, with a special interest in communication and organisational skills.
Eligibility:
This session is specifically for new entrants to the Film & TV Industry based in Scotland. Please only apply if you meet this criteria. BECTU opportunities for those in other areas of the UK can be found here England, Wales.
> Applicants should be based and working, or looking to work, freelance in film and television in Scotland.
> Students are not eligible for this training.
Selection:
> As this is a workshop style course, there are a limited number of spaces available to allow participants the opportunity to interact and ask questions.
> Applications will be assessed and we will prioritise those who are early stage freelancers.
> If we receive more eligible applications than spaces available, we will endeavour to schedule additional training sessions at a later date (subject to funding).
> Places are provided free of charge but are worth a considerable amount. Please only apply if you can commit to attending the session.
