Producer Development Programme

BECTU Vision’s Producer Development Programme provides support for those with the potential to become Scotland’s high-end television Producers of the future.  You can find out more about previous programme participants here.

The 9 month programme,  including monthly group training courses/masterclasses, and bespoke individual courses and connections has been designed to provide support which is tailored to reflect the skills development requirements of each participant.

The 2024-25 programme targets senior scripted film and television practitioners including Production Managers, Line Producers, 1st Assistant Directors, Location Managers, Script Editors and Unscripted Producers with the drive and commitment to take their next steps towards producing scripted television.

Courses and masterclass sessions include:

> Leadership & Management with Hannah Corneck & Claire Mundell

> Understanding Development with STV’s Claire Armspach

> Script Editing & Development with John Yorke

> The Casting Process and Role of the Producer with Casting Directors & Producer Clare Kerr

> Post-Production with

> Health & Safety and the Producers Responsibilities with Mairi Ritchie

> Publicity with Milk Publicity

> BBC Business Affairs

Bespoke Support

Alongside the scheduled monthly sessions, participants will have the opportunity to request individual training courses and meetings to address identified skills or knowledge gaps which will be agreed and facilitated by the Programme Manager. In addition, participants can take advantage of 1-2-1 online sessions with John Yorke which will be available for anyone wanting to build their story skills.

Network Building

The programme will introduce participants to independent production companies based in Scotland and the UK, and Screen Agencies to develop create a network of contacts. Participants will be connected with the ScreenSkills HETV Co-Producer fund which can support paid co-producer placements in partnership with productions. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend the Edinburgh TV Festival in August 2025.

Eligibility

The Producer Development Programme is aimed at experienced professionals who are ready to take the next step in their career towards producing television in the near future.

> Based in Scotland

> Minimum 5 years’ experience as a Scripted film or television Supervisor or Head of Department

or

Minimum 2 Years experience as an Unscripted Television Producer

> Have a passion for drama

> A good knowledge of the television drama landscape in Scotland the the wider UK

> The ability to think critically and creatively

> A high level of organisational and communication skills

> Experience of complex project management

> Familiarity with employment practices and policies such as those relating to diversity, equal opportunities, and health and safety, or the ability to acquire this knowledge quickly

> A good awareness of key-creative organisations working in Scotland and UK-wide.

Participant Commitment

The programme aims to offer a flexible approach to producer training which is designed to fit around participants’ existing work commitments as much as possible. We ask all participants to endeavour to attend all sessions to make the most of the opportunities however we acknowledge that work schedules are not always available in advance and therefore, we can offer support to fund a daily role replacement on set / at work to allow you to attend any sessions should that be required.

Expenses

The Producer Development Programme is designed to increase participant’s prospects when being considered for Producer roles in television drama in the future. The programme is a personal professional development opportunity, and not full time paid employment, however all training course costs and expenses will be covered, including an allowance for childcare and any accessibility support required.
