Child Centred Chaperoning

This course explores the role of Chaperone beyond the regulations, focusing on children’s wellbeing and development, collaboration with production teams, and the practical skills needed on set. With input from a Child Psychologist, Q&A with practitioners, and opportunities to build professional networks, participants will leave with greater confidence and a deeper understanding of child‑centred practice in chaperoning.

Participants will:

>  Learn about accredited training standards recommended for chaperones

>  Gain an overview of child development and needs from a Child Psychologist

>  Understand how chaperones work alongside different crew members

>  Develop confidence in reading production paperwork and understanding on‑set etiquette

>  Take part in a Q&A with a Line Producer and 1st Assistant Director

>  Build connections with other professionals in the field

>  Strengthen their ability to provide child‑centred chaperoning on productions

>  This training offers practical knowledge, professional insight, and a deeper understanding of the responsibilities involved in supporting young performers.

 

Who is this course for?

This course is for existing Chaperones in film and television who would like to develop their practice and those with a background in working with children who are new to the role in film and television.

 

Tutor:

This course will be delivered by highly experienced Child Chaperone and Safeguarding Consultant Anthony Docherty who also has a background in education. Combining nearly ten years of experience safeguarding children on set with a professional foundation in early years education, he has worked on a wide range of productions including Shetland, Vigil, The Island, River City, Gifted, and The Primrose Railway Children, and is well-versed in working with high-profile productions, commercials, and smaller independent projects alike.

 

Eligibility:

This session is specifically for established film and television practitioners based in Scotland. Please only apply if you meet this criteria. BECTU opportunities for those in other areas of the UK can be found here: EnglandWales.

> Applicants should be based and working freelance in film and television in Scotland.

> Students are not eligible for this training.

 

Selection:

> As this is a workshop style course, there are a limited number of spaces available to allow participants the opportunity to interact and ask questions.

> Priority for spaces will be given to eligible BECTU members.

> If more BECTU members apply than spaces available, places will be given to those who demonstrate the greatest professional need for this training Places are provided free of charge but are worth a considerable amount. Please only apply if you can commit to attending the session.

 

Access:

> The training room is has step-free access, accessible parking and accessible toilets.

> Access requirements can be arranged for those selected including BSL translation, captions and large print etc.

> We can help with travel costs for those based outwith Glasgow.
