BECTU Vision is proud to partner with Zero Waste Scotland to release updated practical, easily digestible and actionable guide on reducing food waste in film and TV productions here in Scotland (and indeed, globally!).
Based on unique pioneering research carried out on Scottish productions, the new guidance outlines practical, achievable steps to help production teams minimise food and drink waste on set. With food waste accounting for nearly 5% of Scotland’s total carbon footprint, these measures represent a meaningful way for the screen industry to reduce its environmental impact.
“Food waste is a global issue with serious economic, environmental, and social consequences. In Scotland alone, almost one million tonnes of food and drink are discarded each year—producing a carbon impact of 3.7 million tonnes CO₂e.”
– Zero Waste Scotland
The report offers straightforward solutions that centre on better planning, preparation, and disposal of food on set. It also encourages embedding sustainability into catering decisions from the outset.
Key focus areas include:
> Tracking food and drink waste on set
> Proper segregation and disposal of food waste
> Managing headcounts, pre-orders, and ‘grab and go’ catering
> Prioritising sustainability when hiring caterers
> Reducing packaging waste from food and drink
“By focusing on food waste reduction, productions can significantly reduce the environmental impact of the film industry.”
