Freelance Foundations: Physical Resilience
Working on film and television drama sets has specific physical challenges relating to nature and duration of the postures and positions adopted in the performance of various on-set and desk-based roles. Scheduled in conjunction with our New Entrants Networking event, this training will address the issues and outcomes relating to the musculoskeletal system and offer an explanation of why they occur; and a menu of preventative measures that crew can take to help prevent pain and injury.
Course Content:
- An outline the physical demands of working on-set and in desk-based roles.
- A clarification of the terms ‘health’ and ‘safety’ and who is responsible for them.
- The physical issues that arise from the role, such as low back pain; upper back, neck and shoulder pain; headaches; and pain in the feet. The long-term effects of physical strain such as osteoarthritis.
- A very brief description of the anatomy and physiology involved, encompassing the physical structures involved such as muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints, what happens to them and why it happens.
- What can we do on set to reduce the injury risk?
- What can we do to condition ourselves in non-work time to build some physical resilience? Examples include cardiovascular exercise, stretching, yoga, strengthening.
- What to do if something hurts. The pros and cons of medication; physical ‘first aid’ and some ‘go to’ positions or movements to address pain in certain areas such as the low back.
- Symptoms to not ignore
- A post course handout will be shared which includes menu of exercises, stretches, and advice for participants.
- Note: This is a different course to the taster session that was run in April at BAFTA Guru.
Course Outcomes:
On completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify physical issues which can arise in relation to working on set.
- Understand the anatomy and physiology involved.
