HSE First Aid at Work

Course dates: Tuesday 17, Wednesday 18  & Thursday 19 December 2024

Participants will learn how to assess and manage a diverse range of scenarios, from resuscitation to dealing with workplace  hazards.

On successful completion of an assessment, the participants will be awarded a Health & Safety Executive (HSE) approved First Aid at Work certificate of competence which is valid for 3 years.

This course will be taught as blended leaning with 2 days online, and 1 day in-person in Glasgow

The First Aid at Work syllabus covers:

> Understand the tole and responsibilities of the first aider

> Recording and reporting of accidents and incidents including RIDDOR

> Discussion of specific work-related injuries

> Contents of a First Aid kit (including preventing cross infection)

> Assessing the situation and acting safely effectively and promptly in an emergency

Administer first aid to a casualty who is/requires:

> Unconscious (including seizure)

> Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

> Choking

> Wounded and bleeding

> Suffering from shock

> Appropriate first aid for minor injuries including minor cuts, grazes, bruises, small splinters, minor burns & scalds

Administer first aid to a casualty with

> Injuries to bones, muscles, and joints including suspected spinal injuries

> Chest injuries

> Burns and scalds

> Eye injuries

> Sudden poisoning

> Anaphylactic shock

> Stroke

> Asthma

> Heart Attack including Angina

> Diabetes

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for freelance film & TV practitioners working at all levels, who have an ability to step away from their normal duties in order to administer first aid.

Tutor:

This course will be delivered by Stewart First Aid.

Eligibility:

This session is specifically for established film and television practitioners based in Scotland. Please only apply if you meet this criteria. BECTU opportunities for those in other areas of the UK can be found here: EnglandWales.

> Applicants should be based and working freelance in film and television in Scotland.

> Students are not eligible for this training.

> The training provider requires that participants must be able to complete practical training sessions which includes bending and kneeling for periods of time on the floor for CPR and Recovery Position when required.

Selection:

> As this is a workshop style course, there are a limited number of spaces available to allow participants the opportunity to interact and ask questions.

> Priority for spaces will be given to eligible BECTU members.

> If more BECTU members apply than spaces available, places will be given to those who demonstrate the greatest professional need for this training.

> Places are provided free of charge but are worth a considerable amount. Please only apply if you can commit to attending the session.

> We have a travel fund to support anyone who may need help with travel costs.
