Costume practitioners came together last week to explore how to research, find, fit and manage police uniforms on set.
From period pieces to contemporary dramas of all budgets, the session explored how to be historically accurate as well as understand the best practises, with interactive scenario examples and hands-on tasks.
Led by seasoned Costume Designer April MacTavish, the session helped costume practitioners to build confidence and understanding when working with contemporary and period police uniforms on productions of any budget.
April has worked in the costume industry for 20 years and has had experience of working with police uniforms in contemporary dramas and period pieces. Having designed the first five series of Scot Squad and been the Assistant Designer on both Lockerbie – A search for truth and Chemistry of Death as well as supervisor on detective series Rebus and Vigil, she has encountered most of the situations that dealing with police uniforms brings.
Alastair Dinsmore, Curator at Glasgow Police Museum also delivered a guest presentation to practitioners, sharing the fascinating history of the different police uniforms worn in Scotland over the years.
